Så här mot årets slut kan vi stolt blicka tillbaka på ett händelserikt år för forskning och forskarutbildning inom arbetsintegrerat lärande. Internationella samarbeten, AIL‑konferenser och tidskriften CIWIL har stärkt vår position och bidragit till ny kunskapsutveckling över nationsgränser.
Ytterligare en bärande kraft är doktorandernas arbete. De har fortsatt att driva miljön framåt genom ambitiösa projekt och nära samverkan med olika verksamheter, långt utanför högskolans väggar. Årets externa kvalitetsutvärdering bekräftar dessutom att vår forskning håller hög vetenskaplig nivå. Vi tar med oss bedömargruppens positiva anslag och utvecklingsområden för att fortsätta förändra tillsammans.
Tack till alla medarbetare, samarbetspartners och läsare som bidragit under året. Med erfarenheterna från 2025 ser vi fram emot 2026 med stor tillförsikt.

Det första numret av vår forskningspublikation Current Issues in Work-Integrated Learning (CIWIL) har släppts!
”Det har varit en lång process och mycket hårt arbete. Detta är ett stort steg, inte bara för Högskolan Väst utan också för arbetsintegrerat lärande (AIL) som forskningsfält. Tillsammans med redaktionskommittén, redaktionsrådet och gemenskapen kring AIL ser jag fram emot att bygga en forskningsjournal som verkligen hjälper till att hantera utmaningar kopplade till hållbarhet och teknologiska framsteg”, säger Ulrika Lundh Snis, chefredaktör för CIWIL.
Syftet med CIWIL är att uppmuntra och bidra till innovativ forskning med fokus på relationen mellan arbete och lärande. Tidskriften erbjuder en unik arena för samskapande, utveckling och spridning av aktuella frågor inom arbetsintegrerat lärande och relaterade ämnen.

Högskolan Väst fortsätter att utveckla och stärka sitt styrkeområde arbetsintegrerat lärande (AIL) genom att formalisera ett nytt internationellt nätverk för samarbete inom utbildning och forskning. Nätverket SANWIL etablerades formellt under en konferens i Kapstaden i mitten av november.

Calvin Nau, Jadeline Miao och 16 andra studenter från Rochester Institute of Technology, RIT, deltar i Högskolan Västs industrinära forskningsprojekt PROWIL.
– Vår samverkan löper över tre år och kan öppna för värdefullt lärande för både oss och RIT, säger Thomas Pederson, professor i informatik.

Textil- och läderindustrin har stora utmaningar i att uppnå miljömässig och social hållbarhet i hela produktionskedjan. Företagen Nudie Jeans och Sandqvist undersöker nu tillsammans med forskare på Högskolan Väst hur man kan skapa nya förhållningssätt och bättre metoder som ökar spårbarhet och transparens.

Hur kan industriaktörer lyckas med omställning till hållbar utveckling? Forskaren Sandra Samuelsson studerar hur aktörerna i Sotenäs skapat en framgångsrik symbios där restavfall från bland annat fiskeindustrin blir råvaror till andra företag.

BEVILJADE MEDEL - NYA PROJEKT

Internet har förändrat både brottslighetens natur och hur brottsbekämpande myndigheter måste agera. Ett växande problem är sexuella övergrepp mot barn på nätet bland annat via anonyma slutna forum på Dark Web. Nu har forskare vid Högskolan Väst beviljats medel från Vetenskapsrådet för att studera hur onlinebaserad brottsprevention ska kunna utformas.

Artificiell intelligens förändrar skolan i grunden. Nu samlar forskarskolan GRAITE nio svenska lärosäten för att ge lärarutbildningen verktyg att möta den digitala framtiden, utan att tappa skolans demokratiska värden. Satsningen som får 42 miljoner kronor av Vetenskapsrådet och Högskolan Väst, genom Sara Willermark, är en av lärosätena som ingår.

Innovation intermediation in total defence: the case of Combitech in Sweden är en nyligen publicerad artikel i Defense & Security Analysis, medförfattad av masterstudenten Aaron Ladestam och universitetslektor Wayne Stephen Coetzee, Högskolan Väst. Artikeln visar hur högteknologiska företag som Combitech fungerar som innovationsförmedlare i Sveriges totalförsvar genom att översätta kunskap över civila–militära och offentliga–privata gränser samt genom att underlätta nya former av samarbete, standarder och resiliensbyggande.
Publiceringen sker inom ramen för VIP4WIL, ett Vinnovaprojekt som utvecklar en ny forskningsintegrerad utbildningsmodell.
- Inom VIP4WIL ser vi studenter som verkliga forskningspartners, inte bara som mottagare av kunskap. Att skriva en vetenskapligt granskad artikel tillsammans med en masterstudent visar hur arbetsintegrerat lärande kan skapa ny kunskap som är betydelsefull både för studenten, för högskolan och för våra externa samarbetspartners. På så sätt stärker VIP4WIL både vår forskningsmiljö och samhällets förmåga att hantera komplexa utmaningar, säger Wayne Stephen Coetzee.

I slutet av september arrangerades WIL25-konferensen av Høyskolen Kristiania i samarbete med Högskolan Väst. Evenemanget samlade forskare, lärare och yrkesverksamma från hela världen för att tillsammans forma framtidens lärande i och för arbetslivet. WIL25 var den tredje konferensen i serien, efter WIL22 och WIL24.

När industrin ställer om till ny teknik krävs också nya sätt att tänka, lära, arbeta och samverka. Under Primusdagen 2025 gav industriaktörer och forskare flera exempel på nytänkande kring lärande och hur utmaningar kan leda till mer hållbara affärsmodeller.

För många vuxna migranter är vägen in i arbetslivet beroende av både yrkeskunskaper och svenska språket. En ny avhandling av Linda Febring undersöker hur språk och yrke kan läras parallellt i kombinationsutbildningar.
|
|

|
|
|
|
Anna Karin Olsson är nybliven professor i företagsekonomi med inriktning mot arbetsintegrerat lärande. Hennes forskning handlar om hur organisationer kan möta digitalisering och automation utan att tappa bort det mänskliga – och varför samarbete och reflektion är nyckeln till framgång.

Maria Spante är nybliven professor i informatik med fokus på arbetsintegrerat lärande och vill stärka verksamheters förmåga att förstå sina egna utmaningar. Hon undersöker hur människor kan utveckla sina arbetssätt, sin digitala kompetens och sin gemensamma handlingskraft – även när det skaver.

Nyligen delades pris för WIL Master thesis of excellens ut för första gången.Tre uppsatser från våra masterprogram i AIL nominerades. Vinnare blev Paula von Knobelsdorff-Brenkenhoff för arbetet "Rethinking Professional Development in ChildProtection Work-Integrated Learning in Malta’s NGO Sector”. Hon har läst Master in Sustainable Development. Stort grattis Paula!

Den fjärde internationella konferensen om arbetsintegrerat lärande, WIL26, kommer att hållas vid Högskolan Väst i Trollhättan den 21–23 september 2026. Årets tema är “Embracing Diversity in Work-Integrated Learning Practices”. Vi bjuder in forskare, lärare, studenter och samarbetspartners att delta i en dynamisk konferens fylld med samtal och samarbeten, där idéer frodas och kunskap samskapas.

As the year draws to a close, we can proudly look back on an eventful period for research and doctoral education in work‑integrated learning. International collaborations, WIL conferences, and the journal CIWIL have strengthened our position and contributed to new knowledge development across national borders.
Another driving force is the work of our doctoral students. They have continued to push the environment forward through ambitious projects and close collaboration with a wide range of organisations, far beyond the university walls. This year's external quality evaluation also confirms that our research maintains a high scientific standard. We carry with us the assessment group’s positive feedback and suggested development areas as we continue to create change together.
Thank you to all colleagues, partners, and readers who have contributed throughout the year. With the experiences of 2025, we look forward to 2026 with great optimism.

The first issue of our research publication Current Issues in Work-Integrated Learning (CIWIL) has been released!
“It’s been a long process and a lot of hard work. This is a big step not only for University West but also for work-integrated learning (WIL) as a research field. Together with the Editorial Committee, the Editorial Board and the community surrounding WIL, I look forward to building a research journal that really helps tackle challenges related to sustainability and technological advances.”, says Ulrika Lundh Snis, Editor-In-Chief of CIWIL.
The aim of CIWIL is to encourage and contribute to innovative research focusing on the relationship between work and learning. The journal provides a unique arena for co-creating, enhancing and sharing current issues in work-integrated learning and related topics.

University West continues to develop and strengthen its area of expertise in Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) by formalizing a new international network for collaboration in education and research. The network, SANWIL, was officially established during a conference in Cape Town in mid-November.

The textile and leather industries face major challenges in achieving environmental and social sustainability throughout their production chains. The companies Nudie Jeans and Sandqvist are now collaborating with researchers at University West to explore new approaches and better methods for increasing traceability and transparency.

How can industrial actors succeed in transitioning to sustainable development? Researcher Sandra Samuelsson studies how actors in the municipality of Sotenäs have created a successful symbiosis where residual waste from, among others, the fishing industry becomes raw material for other companies.

GRANTED FUNDING - NEW PROJECTS

The Internet has changed both the nature of crime and how law enforcement agencies must act. A growing problem is child sexual abuse online, including through anonymous closed forums on the Dark Web. Researchers at University West have now been granted funding from the Swedish Research Council to study how online-based crime prevention can be designed.

Artificial intelligence is fundamentally transforming education. Now, the GRAITE graduate school is bringing together nine Swedish universities to provide teacher education with the tools to face the digital future. The initiative, which receives SEK 42 million from the Swedish Research Council, includes University West through Sara Willermark as one of the participating institutions.

Innovation intermediation in total defence: the case of Combitech in Sweden is a newly published article in Defense & Security Analysis, co-authored by Master’s student Aaron Ladestam and Senior Lecturer Wayne Stephen Coetzee, University West.
The article shows how a high-tech companies such as Combitech act as an innovation intermediaries in Sweden’s total defence by translating knowledge across civil–military and public–private boundaries and by facilitating new forms of collaboration, standards and resilience-building.
The article is published within VIP4WIL, a project which aims to develop a new research-integrated education model.
- VIP4WIL is important because it treats students as genuine research partners, not just as recipients of knowledge. Co-authoring a peer-reviewed article with a Master’s student shows how work-integrated learning can create new knowledge that matters for the student, for the university and for our external partners. In that way, VIP4WIL strengthens both our research environment and society’s capacity to deal with complex challenges, says Wayne Stephen Coetzee.

At the end of September, the WIL25 conference was organized by Kristiania University College in collaboration with University West. The event brought together researchers, educators, and professionals from around the world to jointly shape the future of learning in and for working life. WIL25 was the third conference in the series, following WIL22 and WIL24.

As the industry transitions to new technology, new ways of thinking, learning, working, and collaborating are also required. During Primus Day 2025, industry players and researchers shared several examples of innovative approaches to learning and how challenges can lead to more sustainable business models.

Collaboration – the key when language and profession must be learned simultaneously
For many adult migrants, the path into working life depends on acquiring both vocational skills and the Swedish language. A new doctoral thesis from Linda Febring explores how language and profession can be learned in parallel through combination training programs.

Anna Karin Olsson is a newly appointed Professor in Business Administration with a specialization in work-integrated learning. Her research explores how organizations can embrace digitalization and automation without losing sight of the human aspects — and why collaboration and reflection are the keys to success.

Recently, the WIL Master Thesis of Excellence award was presented for the first time.
