Det är med stor stolthet jag ser hur vår forskningsmiljö fortsätter att växa och utvecklas. Under den senaste tiden har många av våra doktorander gått i mål med sina avhandlingar – en imponerande prestation som inte bara markerar viktiga milstolpar i deras egna resor, utan också bidrar till att stärka och förnya vår gemensamma miljö.
Samtidigt utvecklar vi nya sätt att forska på, där nytänkande, samverkan och metodutveckling står i fokus. Våra forskare är dessutom högst närvarande i både nationella och internationella sammanhang och gör tydliga avtryck genom sitt engagemang och sina resultat.
Nu ser jag fram emot årets stora konferens i september – WIL26 - ett värdefullt tillfälle att mötas, samtala och fördjupa våra diskussioner om forskning, tillsammans.

Högskolan Västs forskning inom teknik och lärande stärks av nya anslag från KK-stiftelsen. 62 miljoner kronor satsas på forskning i stark samverkan med över 20 industriföretag. Forskningen ska underlätta industrins hållbarhetsarbete genom nya typer av beläggningar, kompetensutveckling med mera.

När industriföretag ställer om till en digitaliserad produktion innebär det nya roller och arbetssätt för alla i företaget. En förändring som kan vara svår att sätta ord på. Forskaren Linnéa Carlsson lät intervjupersoner visualisera sina tankar om digitalisering på papper, vilket öppnade för reflektioner på ett djupare plan.

Vi är grymt stolta över våra innovativa forskare Asun Valiente och Daniel Sjölie som i dagarna har utsetts till vinnare av IIW Awards 2026 – André Leroy Prize for WELD-VR! De har utvecklat en VR-baserad applikation för lärande om svetsprocesser och svetsmetallurgi baserad på labbmiljön på Produktionstekniskt Centrum i Trollhättan.
Priset delas ut i juli av International Institute of Welding – en global ideell organisation som arbetar för kunskapsutbyte, certifiering och forskning inom svetsning och fogningsteknik.

VIP4WIL-modellen (Vertically Integrated Projects for Work-Integrated Learning) integrerar kandidat-, master- och doktorandstudenter i aktiva forskningsprojekt med externa partners och bildar långsiktiga, vertikalt integrerade team. Studenterna bidrar till autentiska forskningsuppgifter samtidigt som de utvecklar sin forskningskompetens och professionella nätverk redan under tidig utbildningstid.
I januari hade studenter som deltar i VIP4WIL-konceptet sin terminsavslutning med presentation av de projekt de gjort forskningpraktik inom. Tio projektteam presenterade och det var cirka 35 engagerade studenter som presenterade värdefulla resultat.
Den reflekterande delen där forskning möter studentengagemang, där teori möter praktik, där akademi möter industri- och samhällsutmaningar uppmärksammades särskilt.

Ny AIL-rapport
Rapporten Delårsboende i Sotenäs kommun - Hur Sotenäs kan stärka sin attraktionskraft som bostadsort, beskriver resultatet av EU-projektet SIRR, Sustainability, Innovation, and Resilience in Rural areas, som skett i nära samarbete med Sotenäs kommun. Ulrika Lundh Snis och Kristina Areskoug Josefsson deltog som keynotes i mars månads webbpresentation för WIL(d)flowers som arrangeras av The Japanese-German Business Association.
Fokus är bästa praxis, idéer, strukturer och lärdomar från arbetsintegrerat lärande (WIL) i Tyskland och Japan, som uppmuntrar till att bygga broar och utveckla en gemensam förståelse mellan båda länderna.

Nyligen samlade WIL‑CAT‑workshopen (Work‑Integrated Learning – Centre for Activity Theory), under ledning av professor Maria Spante, internationellt etablerade forskare för en intensiv tredagars workshop med målet att utveckla och skapa en framtida agenda för Cultural‑Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) som svar på globala utmaningar och hållbarhetsfrågor.
- Denna workshop vitaliserar verkligen det vetenskapliga arbetet och skapar ett utrymme för djupgående akademisk dialog om hur CHAT kan bidra till och forma ett mer rättvist, hållbart och globalt sammanlänkat samhälle, säger Maria Spante.
En annan deltagare från högskolan var forskaren Monika Hattinger, verksam inom både CAT och industriellt arbetsintegrerat lärande. Hon presenterade betydelsen av samarbete med industrin i relation till hållbarhetsutmaningar.

Ulrika Lundh Snis var en av två talare när Wexsus nya lärarnätverk hade sin första träff. Nätverket är en mötesplats för erfarenhetsutbyte, kompetensutveckling och nya samarbeten mellan utbildning och externa aktörer. Wexsus är en samverkansarena där forskning, utbildning och samhällsutmaningar flätas samman för att accelerera hållbar omställning.
Ulrika pratade om projektet VIP4WIL - Vertically Integrated Projects for (4) Work-Integrated Learning och hur man i projektet integrerar kandidat-, master- och doktorandstudenter i aktiva forskningsprojekt med externa partners. Studenten Constanze Gebauer deltog också i presentationen och delade med sig av sina erfarenheter och lärdomar.

Vården är inte neutral, och det är inte heller utbildningen som formar framtidens sjuksköterskor. Det menar Ivan Andrés Castillo, som i en avhandling vid Högskolan Väst visar hur normkritik kan användas i sjuksköterskeutbildningen för att synliggöra ojämlikheter, stärka studenters reflektion och skapa förutsättningar för en mer jämlik och inkluderande vård.

Vad är det som gör att vi får möjlighet att växa och utvecklas på jobbet? Enligt forskaren Fredrik Hillberg Jarl handlar det inte främst om kurser och utbildningar, utan ledarskapet. I sin avhandling i arbetsintegrerat lärande vid Högskolan Väst visar han hur chefers beteenden och tolkningar formar förutsättningarna för lärande i arbetslivet.

E-hälsa är i dag en självklar del av vården. Digitala patientportaler, e-recept och informationssystem används överallt. Men att införa nya verktyg och system är inte bara en teknisk fråga. För att lyckas måste man ta hänsyn till hur arbetet och vardagen ser ut där vården bedrivs, enligt en ny avhandling från Högskolan Väst.

Hur kan man undervisa de allra yngsta barnen i förskolan utan att ta ifrån dem deras möjlighet att påverka och vara aktiva? I en ny avhandling har Kristina Melker studerat planerad undervisning med barn i åldern ett till tre år. Hon visar att små förskjutningar i pedagogens agerande kan vara avgörande för barnens handlingsutrymme.

Hur kan vanliga hushåll bidra till att göra elsystemet mer motståndskraftigt? Den frågan står i centrum för forskaren Hanna Björner Bauers avhandling, tredjepartsdoktorand anställd hos RISE. I sin forskning undersöker hon hur hushåll kan bli en del av lösningen när elsystemet behöver bli mer resilient.

Den fjärde internationella konferensen om arbetsintegrerat lärande, WIL26, kommer att hållas vid Högskolan Väst i Trollhättan den 21–23 september 2026. Årets tema är “Embracing Diversity in Work-Integrated Learning Practices”. Vi bjuder in forskare, lärare, studenter och samarbetspartners att delta i en dynamisk konferens fylld med samtal och samarbeten, där idéer frodas och kunskap samskapas. Alla accepterade papers kommer att publiceras i WIL Proceedings, rankad i the Norwegian List. Call för papers stänger den 24 april!

Den handlar om hur forskning och industri tillsammans kan forma framtidens människocentrerade produktion.

It is with great pride that I see how our research environment continues to grow and develop. Recently, many of our doctoral students have completed their dissertations – an impressive achievement that not only marks important milestones in their own journeys, but also helps strengthen and renew our shared environment.
At the same time, we are developing new ways of conducting research, with innovation, collaboration, and methodological development in focus. Our researchers are also highly present in both national and international contexts, making a clear impact through their commitment and results.
I am now looking forward to this year’s major conference in September – WIL26 - a valuable opportunity to meet, talk, and deepen our discussions about research, together.

University West’s research in technology and learning is strengthened by new grants from the KK Foundation.
SEK 62 million is invested in research in strong collaboration with more than 20 industrial companies. The research will support the industry’s sustainability efforts through new types of coatings, skills development and more.

When industrial companies transition to digitalised production, it brings new roles and new ways of working for everyone involved. It’s a shift that can be difficult to put into words. Researcher Linnéa Carlsson asked interview participants to visualise their thoughts on digitalisation on paper, which opened the door to deeper reflection.

Winners of the IIW Awards
We are extremely proud of our innovative researchers Asun Valiente and Daniel Sjölie who have recently been named winners of the IIW Awards 2026 – André Leroy Prize for WELD-VR!
They have developed a VR-based application for learning about welding processes and welding metallurgy based on the lab environment at Produktionstekniskt Centrum in Trollhättan.
The prize is awarded in July by the International Institute of Welding – a global non-profit organization that works for knowledge exchange, certification and research in welding and joining technology.

Students engaged in research
The VIP4WIL model (Vertically Integrated Projects for Work-Integrated Learning) integrates bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral students into active research projects with external partners, forming long-term, vertically integrated teams. Students contribute to authentic research tasks while developing their research skills and professional networks early in their studies.
In January, students participating in the VIP4WIL concept concluded the semester by presenting the projects in which they carried out research placements. Ten project teams presented, and around 35 committed students shared valuable results.
The reflective component—where research meets student engagement, where theory meets practice, and where academia meets industrial and societal challenges—was highlighted in particular.

New WIL Report
The report Part-time Living in Sotenäs Municipality – How Sotenäs Can Strengthen Its Attractiveness as a Place to Live, describes the results of the EU project SIRR (Sustainability, Innovation, and Resilience in Rural Areas), carried out in close collaboration with Sotenäs Municipality. The focus is on best practices, ideas, structures, and lessons learned from work-integrated learning (WIL) in Germany and Japan, encouraging the building of bridges and the development of a shared understanding between the two countries.

International workshop - CHAT for change
Recently, the WIL‑CAT workshop (Work‑Integrated Learning – Centre for Activity Theory), led by Professor Maria Spante, brought together internationally established researchers for an intensive three‑day workshop with the aim of developing and shaping a future agenda for Cultural‑Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) in response to global challenges and sustainability issues.
- This workshop truly revitalises the scientific work and creates a space for in-depth academic dialogue on how CHAT can contribute to and help shape a more just, sustainable and globally interconnected society, says Maria Spante.
Another participant from the university was researcher Monika Hattinger, active in both CAT and industrial work-integrated learning. She highlighted the importance of collaboration with industry in relation to sustainability challenges.

Keynote at Wexsus
Ulrika Lundh Snis was one of two speakers when Wexsus’ new teacher network held its first meeting. The network is a forum for sharing experience, professional development, and new collaborations between education and external stakeholders.
Ulrika spoke about the VIP4WIL project - Vertically Integrated Projects for (4) Work-Integrated Learning, and how the project integrates bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral students into active research projects with external partners. The student Constanze Gebauer also took part in the presentation and shared her experiences and lessons learned.

Norm criticism as a tool for tomorrow’s nurses
Healthcare is not neutral, and neither is the education that shapes tomorrow’s nurses. That is the view of Ivan Andrés Castillo, who in a doctoral thesis at University West demonstrates how norm criticism can be used in nursing education to make inequalities visible, strengthen students’ reflection, and create the conditions for more equitable and inclusive healthcare.

How do managers’ behavior shape learning at work?
What is it that enables us to grow and develop at work? According to researcher Fredrik Hillberg Jarl, it is not primarily about courses and training, but about leadership. In his dissertation in work-integrated learning at University West, he shows how managers’ behaviors and interpretations shape the conditions for learning in working life.

Successful eHealth work adapts to the local context
eHealth is now a natural part of healthcare. Digital patient portals, e-prescriptions and information systems are used everywhere. But introducing new tools and systems is not just a technical matter. To succeed, you must take into account what work and everyday life look like where care is delivered, according to a new thesis from University West.

Being responsive creates room for action for the youngest preschool children
How can we teach the very youngest children in preschool without limiting their opportunities to influence, explore, and be active? In a new dissertation, Kristina Melker has examined planned teaching with children aged one to three. The results show that small, deliberate changes in the educator’s approach and actions can have a major impact on children’s scope for action.

Everyday habits can strengthen tomorrow’s power system
How can ordinary households help make the power system more resilient? That question is at the heart of researcher Hanna Björner Bauer’s doctoral thesis. She is a third-party doctoral candidate employed at RISE. In her research, she explores how households can become part of the solution when the power system needs to become more resilient.

The fourth international conference on Work-Integrated Learning, WIL26, will be held at University West in Trollhättan on 21–23 September 2026. This year’s theme is “Embracing Diversity in Work-Integrated Learning Practices”. We invite researchers, teachers, students, and partners to take part in a dynamic conference filled with dialogue and collaboration—where ideas flourish and knowledge is co-created. All accepted papers will be published in the WIL Proceedings, ranked in the Norwegian List. The call for papers closes on April 24!
