As we gear up for our upcoming symposium, we are excited to introduce our distinguished invited speakers. These experts will bring their unique perspectives and cutting-edge insights to the event, enriching our discussions and inspiring attendees.
In this newsletter, we are delighted to introduce opening speaker Carl-Oskar Bohlin, Swedish Minister of Civil Defence!

Carl-Oskar Bohlin
Carl-Oskar Bohlin has served as Sweden's inaugural Minister for Civil Defence since 2022, leading national emergency-preparedness, civil-protection and total-defence coordination within the Ministry of Defence. A member of the Swedish Parliament (Riksdag) since 2010, the 39-year-old Moderate-Party politician holds a law degree from Uppsala University.
In this role he oversees the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB), spearheads Sweden's integration into NATO resilience planning, and manages the country's commitments to the EU's rapid-response pool. Bohlin is a frequent keynote speaker at Nordic, EU and trans-Atlantic fora, emphasising that "a strong civil defence is required for the defence of Sweden and our Allies," and advocating whole-of-society readiness to safeguard essential services in an era of hybrid threats and high-end conflict.

The 15th CBRNe Protection Symposium will feature an impressive scientific programme with cutting-edge research and technology across multiple domains. Our comprehensive programme addresses critical areas of CBRN defence with presentations organised into four main tracks: Innovation, Detection, Resilience, and Management.
The symposium will showcase significant advancements in protective materials and innovative respiratory protection systems designed for extreme environments. Attendees will gain insights into next-generation detection technologies, from AI-enhanced sensors to portable analytical platforms capable of identifying complex threat agents in field settings.
Among the many groundbreaking presentations, delegates will have the opportunity to hear about novel multi-dimensional mass spectrometry methods for confirmatory threat detection, miniaturised Raman systems for field forensics, and body-on-a-chip technologies for toxicity determination of CBRN agents. Research addressing genetic biosecurity threats will provide evidence-based assessments of emerging risks, whilst presentations on decontamination technologies will showcase innovations for both military and civilian applications.
Particularly noteworthy are the sessions exploring international collaborative initiatives enhancing preparedness against chemical and biological terror attacks. The programme features bilateral partnerships for CBRN training, European mobile laboratory development, and transnational surveillance systems.
The symposium continues to strengthen its position as a premier global forum, with presentations from researchers and practitioners across Europe and beyond. International collaboration emerges as a cornerstone of effective CBRN defence, with numerous bilateral and multilateral initiatives highlighted throughout the programme.
This gathering presents an unparalleled opportunity to engage with leading experts, discover the latest technological advances, and participate in discussions that will shape the future of CBRN defence and protection.

ABOUT
|
A number of Swedish government agencies co-organise a Symposium on protection against hazardous substances every third year, with the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) serving as the main organiser. Initiated in the 1980s, the Symposium initially concentrated on protection against biological and chemical threats. Since the last two occasions, however, its has expanded to include nuclear and radiological issues, as well as explosives in conjunction with CBRN. The last Symposium attracted 600 attendees from 30 different countries, comprising 450 delegates and 150 exhibitors.
The 15th CBRNe Protection Symposium is scheduled to take place at Malmö Mässan, Malmö, Sweden, from 30 September to 2 October 2025. It targets professionals actively involved in the field of CBRNe protection. We invite all participants to enrich the symposium through engaging discussions, in-depth conversations, and the exchange of recent research findings.
An extensive exhibition of CBRNe protection equipment will be arranged in conjunction with the symposium, where industry leaders and institutes will display their latest products and research in an inspiring environment. This exhibition presents an excellent opportunity for symposium attendees to familiarise themselves with the latest commercially available, state-of-the-art equipment related to CBRNe protection.
