As we gear up for our upcoming symposium, we are excited to introduce our distinguished invited speakers. These experts will bring their unique perspectives and cutting-edge insights to the event, enriching our discussions and inspiring attendees.

In this newsletter, we are thrilled to highlight two of our featured session speakers. You can find all of our invited speakers on our website.

Maksym Kustov

Maksym Kustov

Prof. Maksym Kustov, Head of the CBRN and Threat Analysis Research Laboratory, National University of Civil Protection of Ukraine. From 2010 to 2021, he was involved in the organization and training of command personnel for CBRN teams. Currently, he serves as the scientific supervisor of several scientific programs and international grants, as well as Ph.D. students. His main scientific interests include the liquidation of major CBRN accidents, crisis management, and training of rescuers.

James Revill

James Revill

James Revill is the Head of the WMD and Space Security Programmes at UNIDIR. His research interests focus on the evolution of regimes dealing with weapons of mass destruction, and he has published widely on this topic. He was previously a Research Fellow with the Harvard Sussex Programme at SPRU, University of Sussex, and completed research fellowships with the Landau Network Volta Centre in Italy and the Bradford Disarmament Research Centre in the UK. He holds a PhD focused on the evolution of the Biological Weapons Convention from the University of Bradford, UK.

Scientific Program takes shape

The 15th CBRNe Protection Symposium is set to deliver its most comprehensive scientific line-up yet, blending high-level policy perspectives with cutting-edge research and operational insights.

The Opening Ceremony will feature Carl-Oskar Bohlin, Sweden's Minister for Civil Defence, discussing whole-of-society resilience. He will be joined by Dr. Bryan Wells, former NATO Chief Scientist, who will offer foresight on emerging CBRN risks.

Four major keynotes will delve deeper into key topics: a representative from DG ECHO will discuss building Europe's rescEU CBRN fleet; Dr. Christopher Timperley will address chemical forensics supporting OPCW investigations; Dr. Christina Baxter will cover translating responder needs into next-generation protective equipment; and Prof. David Wishart will explore AI-accelerated protein design for threat modelling.

Featured session speakers include experts such as Dr. Sarah Clapham (OPCW), Dr. Peter Hotchkiss (OPCW), Dr. Karl Sörenson (FOI), Dr. James Revill (UNIDIR), Lucia Mullen, and Col. Dr. Maksym Kustov (National University of Civil Defence of Ukraine).

Early abstract submissions highlight two leading hot-topic tracks: Next-generation Threat Detection, covering AI-enabled sensors and novel methology, and Protective Materials, focusing on novel composites and smart textiles.

The broader scientific programme will encompass a wide array of critical areas, including modern biodetection, chemical agent sensing, radiological/nuclear detection, integrated analytics, decontamination technologies, healthcare strategies, medical countermeasures, forensic analysis, societal resilience, international cooperation, and the role of autonomous systems and AI in CBRNe protection.

The deadline for oral presentation abstracts closed on 10 May 2025, but poster abstracts are still being accepted until 30 May 2025.

A brief snake history

Did you know that:

  • The "snake-sympoisium" has gracefully slithered into existence every three years for more than forty years!?
  • His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf has twice illuminated the event with his royal presence!
  • Esteemed speakers have included international director generals from the OPCW (on two occasions) and the IAEA, UN High Representatives, Swedish Foreign Ministers, Ministers of Defence, and this year, we're adding the Minister of Civil Defence and NATO STO Chief Scientist to the list.
  • The symposium's focus has metamorphosed from early concerns of chemical protection, detection, and training to encompass biological agents and terrorist threats, now with an emphasis on CBRNe. This includes enhanced forensic techniques, societal resilience, and a broader view on global security.
  • We also delve into CBRNe incidents and accidents from around the globe, shedding light on international events and their influence on safety protocols and emergency response strategies.

ABOUT

A number of Swedish government agencies co-organise a Symposium on protection against hazardous substances every third year, with the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) serving as the main organiser. Initiated in the 1980s, the Symposium initially concentrated on protection against biological and chemical threats. Since the last two occasions, however, its has expanded to include nuclear and radiological issues, as well as explosives in conjunction with CBRN. The last Symposium attracted 600 attendees from 30 different countries, comprising 450 delegates and 150 exhibitors.

The 15th CBRNe Protection Symposium is scheduled to take place at Malmö Mässan, Malmö, Sweden, from 30 September to 2 October 2025. It targets professionals actively involved in the field of CBRNe protection. We invite all participants to enrich the symposium through engaging discussions, in-depth conversations, and the exchange of recent research findings.

An extensive exhibition of CBRNe protection equipment will be arranged in conjunction with the symposium, where industry leaders and institutes will display their latest products and research in an inspiring environment. This exhibition presents an excellent opportunity for symposium attendees to familiarise themselves with the latest commercially available, state-of-the-art equipment related to CBRNe protection.
