National workshop: help shape Sweden’s contribution to the International Polar Year 2032–33

On 29 September 2026, the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat will host the Swedish National IPY V Scoping Workshop, bringing together Sweden’s polar research community to explore opportunities for the Fifth International Polar Year (IPY 2032–33).

The workshop is an important step in Sweden’s preparations for IPY V. Participants will discuss scientific opportunities, emerging priorities, and how Swedish research, expertise, infrastructure and partnerships can contribute internationally.

Participants will meet at university and research hubs across Sweden, connected through a shared national online meeting. Joining a local hub is encouraged to support discussion and networking, but remote participation will also be possible.

A short online preparatory seminar for registered participants will be held on 21 September.

Swedish planning committee appointed for International Polar Year 2032–2033

The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat has appointed a national planning committee for the Fifth International Polar Year (IPY-5). The committee will advise the Secretariat, help identify priorities and opportunities for Sweden’s participation, and support the development of Sweden’s preparations for this major international research initiative.

The members were selected through an open nomination process, followed by consultations with the Swedish Research Council and Formas. The committee brings together broad scientific and professional expertise from different disciplines, sectors and institutions.

– The Fifth International Polar Year offers a unique opportunity to strengthen collaboration across disciplines, sectors and generations. I am honoured to lead such a diverse and experienced group as we begin shaping Sweden’s contribution to IPY-5 and the scientific and societal impact it can deliver, says Susanna Hansen van der Watt, researcher at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Chair of the Swedish Planning Committee for IPY-5.

Arctic thematic call within the Polar Research Process - reminder

The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat invites researchers at Swedish universities and research institutes to submit proposals for research themes within the national research programme SWEDARCTIC. The call will help shape future expedition planning for 2028–2030. The deadline for submissions is 30 September 2026. 

POLARIN Transnational Access Call 2026

The EU funded project POLARIN invites the scientific community to submit proposals to access 31 Research Infrastructures in both polar regions, contributing to addressing key research priorities.

An information webinar for applicants will be held on 14 September. The application deadline is 29 October 2026.
