Replacing car use with cycling in Finland

It’s commonly said that many car trips are short and could be cycled, but how true is this and who does it apply to? We categorised Finnish residents into distinct groups and assessed the amount of car travel that could be cycled in each with national travel survey data.

New technologies and services modifying the transport-land use dynamics

Automation, digitalisation, and new mobility services will reshape how we travel and how cities grow. Policies adopted today will determine whether these changes fuel urban sprawl or foster denser, more sustainable development.

Study: How to strengthen the future forest roads

Sweden’s forest roads are neither adapted for heavier vehicles nor for climate change. That’s the bad news. The good news is that there are several cost-effective ways to improve and reinforce the roads in the future. This is shown by a large research project that was recently completed.

AI helps human experts improve road maintenance

Traditional road maintenance planning is usually based on procuring specific measures at the lowest possible price. However, when contractors are awarded design, construct and maintain (DCM) contracts of up to 15 years, there is a greater need for more dynamic and sustainable methods.

EU project aims to reduce particulate emission

As exhaust emissions decrease due to electrification, the focus on other emissions is increasing. A new EU project – in which VTI (Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute) plays an important role – is now focusing on reducing particulate emissions from road surfaces, tyres and brakes.
